You don’t understand engineer entitlement until you read a HN comment thread about hiring. I’m frankly blown away any of them have jobs.

Heck yeah! I’ve also found that to be exceedingly successful at identifying skilled candidates.

we also do pretty long sessions (2-4h) so people loosen up and start programming "normally" (as much as can be expected)

I would love to do that, but being in a distributed team of a startup makes that very difficult and costly :(

Yeah I can see that. In that case, I always do like 10 tech questions then a "take home" project.

I like that! We do it a bit differently and hire for ~2wks to work with a team and help solve a problem on one of our projects.

Yep, we don’t require that. Minimum of 10hrs/wk and those can be after-hours or weekend.
