problem is the media here routinely make stuff up against people who can't defend themselves and retractions are buried at the back

having to pay lawyers fees even if you win is a good way to shut down all newspapers.
most of the newspapers in the UK are controlled by very wealthy individuals - there's zero chance of them being shut down.
gawker was shut down by a lawsuit they lost. Imagine if all you needed was any lawsuit at all.
UK courts don't award damages on anything like the scale of the Gawker case - usually a few £100,000s
I'd rather we didn't have the law but self regulation has failed over and over again. It isn't just about celebrities.
