what's the goal of collecting the data? (e.g. we track for emberconf to see if our efforts are working)

exactly, we are tracking to see how we do over time. it's easy with events, and we do that already.

we want it across the GitHub org and per repo, that's where we think we can measure impact.

I think we have pretty good evidence of successful efforts. Don't need to get measurements right up front.

we do for events, i don't have a ton for large open source projects. working on it though.

technically we do a community survey, but the survey also reflects efforts at the main conf.

for us, reaching out to all Meetups, podcasts, Twitter accts w/ followers, etc has helped.
