the cost to whom? For the Ruby devs I don’t know but it violated my soft. engineering rules :) didn’t made my life easier as a user

and I’m not sure (but you would know) whether it made 1.9 adoption faster (I do not believe so)

moving 1.8.7 closer to 1.9.2 made it easier to write shims, which made the transition smoother.
