A couple of people pointed out that the prevalence of poaching, at least in SV, makes investing in people harder. Hmmmm...
part of it is that it's unsustainable because the incentives can be confusing (stock options) or one time.

I'd rather give people market salaries and bonuses when I can, but big companies can dangle shiny-but-perhaps-not-valuable.

bigger companies are usually worse at culture/bureaucracy. Smaller companies can compete on that and trust employees to be smart
