self fulfilling fallacy: "we don't invest in people because they leave". People leave because they aren't being invested in.

or maybe they should pay market salaries
-
I don't think that's the key issue, tbqh.
-
what is “poaching”? Why is there a perception that it is bad to leave if there is a better job out there?
-
part of it is that it's unsustainable because the incentives can be confusing (stock options) or one time.
-
I'd rather give people market salaries and bonuses when I can, but big companies can dangle shiny-but-perhaps-not-valuable.
-
bigger companies are usually worse at culture/bureaucracy. Smaller companies can compete on that and trust employees to be smart
-
yep. We work hard ;) just saying it's not as simple as "Y U NO MARKET RATE"

doesn't seem beneficial for a company to focus on. Worked with a boss like this, made the whole culture feel forced.
-
a boss like what?
-
fearful of losing devs, big focus on loyalty, personally offended when people go.
-
ah sure. I personally am happy to see people go to a better place, and happy to help them level up.
-
seems silly to pretend I don't worry about losing people though :)
-
yeah, now being on the other side of that I do get it. Anything you find works well for finding that balance?
-
I try to be as honest as I possibly can, but your earlier tweet makes me nervous :/
-
:) It's a balance I think. As with most things honesty/open conversation can't hurt.

yeah, it seems worse in tech.
-
Tech companies want replaceable assembly line workers, don't see the field as creative / worth investing in.
-
but assembly lines hire and train low-experience workers.
