In thinking this over you are correct, not all populism is correct. Sometimes it's needed. However...

And I might be mistaken, but it seems like populism's goal is to overthrow the current government (people vs elites).

If the government is factually oppressive then populism could be the savior. However, many times the resulting government is worse.

True, but it's all about appealing to the emotion of the masses. Which is influenced by propaganda. This the cycle of democracy.
