Also monarchies seem ridiculous in the US. Less so in Europe.
I don't think that's quite right. Our Supreme Court has a lot of power to reshape the meaning... principles remain

it's shocking to me that the treaty allows brexit. The US required a war to attempt it, and never again.

big sticking point appears to be, if other members of EU don’t agree to exit plan in 2 years does that mean UK can’t leave?

I imagine a lot of people are thinking about it the way people would feel if a deep red state in the US seceded ;p
