This article http://mikehadlow.blogspot.com/2015/12/learn-to-code-its-harder-than-you-think.html … is like telling people not to take a first aid course because medicine is hard. 1/

I've also helped a ton of people get enough programming skills to do their job better. You can never predict the point where they'll stop 5/

Again, if someone knows enough excel to improve their productivity, there's a very good chance learning to code will help them. 6/

Just because someone doesn't have a Ph.D in English doesn't mean we discourage them from learning writing skills. 7/

TLDR scripting languages have a nice "onboarding to productivity" curve. We should encourage more people to take the journey. 8/8

@wycats I think there's a trend saying we should teach everyone programming. IMO not gonna happen. You're right too tho, not all or nothing. -
@Mrberggg The fact that there's a giant cliff between Excel and my-script.rb or .js is the real problem. -
@wycats For sure. The barrier to entry is getting lower tho. I remember trying C in high school, turned me off programming for a long time

@wycats But did you enjoy it while struggling? Did you get excited at prospect of programming? I did. Assume you did. Think that's his point -
.
@AdamRackis I completely gave up as a kid because I was convinced QBasic was a "toy" & I was never gonna understand "real programming" (C) -
@AdamRackis I didn't pick it up again until I was 23 and got into it through "web design" which seemed easier. -
@AdamRackis I only got into web design because I was desperate for work. -
@AdamRackis I was WRITING PROGRAMS at 8 years old and convinced I didn't have the aptitude for it. No good. -
@wycats How was that possible? Low self-esteem? Poor guidance? -
@AdamRackis probably the same root cause as people believing that aptitude in excel is a poor predictor for aptitude in programming. -
@wycats Well I'm glad it worked out. JS community is lucky to have you. How'd your Nov. TC39 presentation go? - 4 more replies

@wycats In general I think our culture doesn’t do a good enough job of recognizing that struggle is a perfectly ok part of learning -
