Hierarchical title sets like junior dev, dev, senior dev imply that development skills are the only thing you need for the job.

Some "junior devs" contribute more to a team than the seniors. But they're new to coding, so they're officially regarded as less important.

Things junior devs can offer that can make them more valuable than seniors: leadership, process, outside perspective, openness, empathy.

Coding experience is useful to a team, for sure. But these days it's just one of a constellation of skills the team as a whole has to have.

You could argue that "developer" includes non-coding elements. But if so, why are folks coming from code schools automatically junior devs?

@sarahmei Tilde has one title ("Member of Technical Staff", cribbed from Fog Creek) and salary level is based on multiple factors.

@wycats I like that. Have you found any problems like the ones you get with "it's flat, nobody has a title"?

@sarahmei we're still small, but not yet. Honestly, titles don't come up very often.

@wycats @sarahmei title is an externality. You use it to show others who don't have a deep understanding of you. And then they still don't.

@purp @wycats it's less about the titles and more about having consistent guidelines for people to progress. http://www.jofreeman.com/joreen/tyranny.htm …

@sarahmei @purp we have levels, but the criteria are more than just raw experience.

@sarahmei @purp we have open salaries (internally) based on level, so we have effectively unionized employees.

@sarahmei @purp we do annual bonuses based on salary (no founder withdrawals so far) so everyone does well in good years.

@sarahmei @purp if a new employee wants a higher salary, they negotiate on behalf of existing employees. This has happened several times.

@wycats @purp I can see why you don't have the flat-organization problems I've seen other folks have. Lots of structure under the surface.

@sarahmei @purp it's important that higher "level" engineers are not "in charge" of others. Good ideas come from everywhere.

@sarahmei @purp there is a "cell" structure I've been reading about that seems to work well alongside traditional mgmt for things like HR.
