For what it's worth, 140 chars is rough, but I think the remote work debate undervalues face-to-face collaboration.

@wycats are you asking for a debate though when you start out describing the way some people like to work (and work well) as "depressing"?

@eZainny I work well remotely too but that can easily hide advantages of a good f2f environment.

@wycats No disagreement there. I think Twitter lacks the bandwidth to have a good discussion about this unfortunately :-/

@eZainny agreed. I've worked in terrible f2f environments (salespeople selling ideas we were brainstorming about!) so I get it.

@fivetanley @wycats THIS. Sometimes it’s really nice to say “enough of you people, let me get some work done.”

@cwoodcox @fivetanley yeah, me and @tomdale talk about this a lot. We have a work-from-home day at @tildeio for example.

@wycats Yes. Not a popular opinion in the enlightened world these days, but yes being in an office together is almost always more productive

@wycats People often confuse the sympton and cause. Lotsa in-office jobs suck because of the people, not because you are in the office

@wycats I think most remote work proponents would agree, citing the extra face time they get with their immediate families.

@wycats On the remote team I worked on, we were *very* face-to-face, using Hangouts all day long to have very close to in-person level comm.

@wycats I worked remotely all 2010. Hated almost every part of it and got very little of any value done. I'd hesitate every trying it again.

@wycats it’s safe to say that we were 5x more productive collaborating on JSON API in person than we ever are remotely. Some tasks favor F2F

@wycats That said, I wouldn't suggest remote pairing before learning in-person pairing well.

@wycats I find pairing via log me in hamachi/other tools plus things like Google Hangouts is as effective, as long as those tools are used
