@wycats "platform package manager" or "language package manager" vs "system package manager"
But yeah, it's subtle and kinda blurry.

@izs The subtleness causes people to think that apt-get is somehow analogous to npm/bundler/cargo. They are not particularly related imho -
@wycats Well they're definitely related: As a user/sysadmin running a package, do I get dependencies from apt or npm, etc? Not always clear. -
@mcpherrinm if you're installing a package for system-wide use, use apt-get. If you're building an app, use npm. -
@wycats the distinction doesn't feel big to me when I'm on a single purpose or single user machine. -
@mcpherrinm it is very large. Systems have to remain globally coherent. Applications only need to be locally coherent.

@wycats language-specific package manager -
@JonathanAbrams that isn't really the distinction I'm trying to highlight: the difference between system installation and project management -
@wycats project package managers -
@JonathanAbrams lots of people are saying "project". I like it!

@wycats the former is dependency management, the latter is an installation medium? That’s how i’d see it, anyway. -
@landongn The fact one is about system-wide installation & the other is about app dependencies should play into the description, no? -
@wycats Potentially. System Configuration versus Project configuration, perhaps? -
@landongn system vs. project... useful!

@wycats app dependency manager? -
@villesundberg So dependency manager > package manager. Nice. It's a big wordy... but getting somewhere
