All of the blame assignment aside, maybe we should talk about structural issues w/ conferences.

@wycats I enjoyed RubyConf 2008 in Orlando because there were just ppl loitering in lobby discussing stuff comfortably. It wasn't all bar.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@wycats@knowtheory +1, I heard that Strange Loop attendees really enjoyed night activity in the City Museum: https://thestrangeloop.com/sessions/strange-loop-party-at-city-musuem … -
@guilleiguaran@wycats the City Museum is pretty singular and unique ;) (also, incidentally it has a bar inside it)

@wycats@knowtheory My favourite conferences are where I get to talk and hack with people at night w/food and maybe a beer or two. -
@wycats@knowtheory I generally avoid drinkups because it's more about drinking and less about socializing and hacking. -
@dkubb@wycats@knowtheory same here. Drinkups are a waste of time and money. It shouldn't be an official part of any confs.

@wycats@knowtheory it’s a reason why I always try to choose open places as after party location that allow both.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@wycats@knowtheory Please? I often do the same thing. Or find a small laid back group to hang out with. -
@elight@wycats@knowtheory I miss Werewolf. -
@purp@elight@wycats@knowtheory this is why I avoid the parties even at conferences that have them. - 1 more reply

@wycats@knowtheory@tomdale software should be humanity; much drinking happens; better than *pure* tech, tho; too complicated for tweets.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@wycats@knowtheory I usually skip the parties and either take a walk in a new city or go back to my room and experiment w/ what I learned.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@wycats@benediktdeicke maybe that's why i am not a conference-person. Talks are online anyway and i don't care much for the drinking part.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@wycats@tomdale@knowtheory I hate that every conference is half tech half beer, also why I rarely go to them. -
@ryanflorence@wycats@tomdale@knowtheory Night events usually seem forced, but alcohol gets strangers over the hump, I guess... -
@davidwalshblog 30 mins in most people aren't worth talking to anymore if you yourself are not drinking. -
@ryanflorence A quiet lounge area where you can (or not) grab a drink is ideal. After a day of talks, 1 glass of wine winds me down... -

@fivetanley@ryanflorence If the night activity is in a bar environment, heavy drinking seems the only option. Breeds that atmosphere.
