Any sufficiently complicated company w/o management contains an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of management

@wycats cute and pithy, but how do you explain @github / @stripe ? They seem pretty functional as companies and are sizeable.

@mattknox but is there an ad hoc informally specified management there?

@wycats I don't think so, no. As I understand it, there aren't people who always manage, but rather one's role varies by project.

@mattknox I think you may be mistaken. How do you suspect information flows to people with hiring and firing power?

@wycats @mattknox granted from a grumpy former employee, so salt needed, but for a supposedly flat org, sure sounds like there's management.

@knowtheory @mattknox if someone has firing power, either they personally understand what every employee does or there is management. QED

@wycats @knowtheory It seems that you conflate communication and management. I can let X know that Y is doing well without a manager.

@mattknox @knowtheory if X has firing power and trusts you but not Y, you have informal management.

@LeanStarter I kind of liked the framing in http://www.amazon.com/Accelerate-Building-Strategic-Agility-Faster-Moving/dp/1625271743/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431359580&sr=8-1&keywords=accelerate+kotter … - a mix of both is useful - changes as you grow @rxgx @chrislorenz

@wycats @rxgx @chrislorenz Inst knowledge is distributed throughout the org. Shouldn't decisions be made by those closest to the work?
