Imagine that Apple replaced the Search engine in iOS6 with Altavista. That's what happened with iOS6 Maps.

@wycats It was so bad in DC. It wanted us to go through the woods down a one way street the wrong way. Terrible.

@RedWolves That sounds hyperbolic, but I suspect it is not. On the way to the airport, it told us to drive 8mi when the airport was 4mi away

@wycats Nope @toddmparker can vouch for the woods and @johnkpaul for the one way. We also were directed the long way around to the airport.

@wycats you are comparing 8 yr old tech with a new one, and it’s all AI.. So things will get better over time

@wycats That doesn't seem fair. Alta Vista was pretty awesome back in the day.

@captain_tenille but not today. If Apple replaced the search engine with AltaVista and no option to replace it, it would suck.

@wycats ...if altavista had superior technology but more limited data than Google, I'd buy that analogy :).

@hypomodern @wycats In what world did apple come up with superior mapping technology than google did in 8 years w/ over 100x more people?

@carllerche @wycats Specifically the old maps app vs. the new one. The new one has shit for data but better tech like vector tiles.

@hypomodern @carllerche the data matters far more than the UI. Not getting where you need to go == poor experience
