FWIW, the only argument that I hear advanced in this space is the baker had *religious convictions* which are meaningfully different from vanilla *political views*.

But at the same time, yes, it is difficult and often confusing as to how to balance the needs of the social contract with freedoms for individuals with power, influence and authority.
