Almost as excruciatingly painful as watching you reinvent severly-impaired axiology to justify inviting white supremacists to your crappy conferencehttps://twitter.com/jdegoes/status/1021782818735697921 …

It's excruciatingly painful to watch developers reinvent severely-impaired, poorly-abstracted versions of monads for the billionth time. https://github.com/withoutboats/rfcs/blob/4059d7277cf30d75dfd55bddbe930ca0e6db90fc/text/2394-async_await.md …

So instead formulating and objective analysis as to why @jdegoes maybe incorrect in his assessment, you take the intellectually lazy approach of ad-hominem attack while elevating yourself as arbitrator of what speakers should not be allowed to speak at conferences?

In the absence of any rebuttal, I'd like to elaborate on my position, which is that @jdegoes is actually correct. With the notion of a monad being such a fundamental unit of composition in building software, it behooves any language designer to incorporate it in their lang spec.

While I agree, that any language designer has incredible leeway to choose the nomenclature and how all of these important language constructs are "packaged", there is no denying the fundamental definitions of category theory, and their importance in building a useful language.

If monads were truly so self-evidently the right way to package the concept and expose ergonomically, what's the reason for the work on arrows?

The present way in which monads are expressed *may not* be packaged in the most ergonomically viable way. But, I have yet to hear compelling arguments for alternatives. _My_ beef with the original tweet is the sleight-of-hand invoked in order to dismiss the original critique.

The original tweet attempted to claim that Rust developers were ignorant of the monadic literature ("reinventing", "severely impaired") without even a cursory analysis about whether that seemed true.

      Replying to @wycats @LogosOperandi and

The fact that several of the designers have Ph.D in CS, and have clearly studied the monadic literature make it clear that the original author was not making an argument, but rather a veiled kind of ad hominem attack. It should be unsurprising that the attack was reciprocated.

Before casually saying that a group of people are ignorant of something, a person interested in reasonable discourse would check to see whether that sounds likely.

Did you miss the part where I quoted the proposal, which cites a "lack of research" on a generalized model and a need to "ship" as justification? Await / async in any language is a terrible idea—put forth and implemented by, I'm sure, quite wonderful and well-intentioned people.pic.twitter.com/cSG7SZrOOE

You should totally work out the proposal then. Clearly you've figured out something about combining borrowing and monads that others haven't. 😉

I don't think the issue is that the Rust language team is unaware of higher kinded types.
