This isn't just for stuff sitting in an office in Pax River, either. Both the US and Royal Navies run XP on *ships*.https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/navy-ships/news/a27108/hms-queen-elizabeth-windows-xp/ …

Microsoft has long made a fortune off of being directly involved in weapons development. They're not just selling software to engineers. They are designing and supporting systems that are literally in weapons platforms.

There are so many stories like this with MS through the decades.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-16/microsoft-wins-lucrative-cloud-deal-with-intelligence-community …

When the Google stuff happened, I cautioned against considering it too big a win. Google was never a serious player in this space. Companies you've never heard of are dragging in 8 and 9 figure hauls. But so too is MS.pic.twitter.com/F2a565r1G4

My point in this is that we can celebrate tech solidarity organizing and should but we gotta be real real honest about scope.

In direct action training you learn that the most effective direct actions have a few common elements: - a clear ask - a person or entity who can be held responsible - and a willingness to make the cost of noncompliance overly burdensome

Given that Microsoft has a 15 year history of building tech for DHS, that has to factor into your solidarity action. What does a measurable outcome look like? What tools do you have to make the cost unbearable?

      Replying to @EmilyGorcenski

It looks like the current activism is a direct response to the heinous activity on the border, which narrows the scope a lot. The goal, it seems, is to show that "ICE is so toxic that even MS is pulling out", which should help with this more narrow humanitarian crisis.
