Not forced—a choice to invest into a product they believed in, versus (in theory) going slower and providing less value to the world over that time. They may have been able to achieve more this way (and Microsoft likely agrees). Both ways work; different tradeoffs.

That's fine, but that's pretty different from the idea that "we had to play the game"

Good point. Personally, I don't think 'playing the game' is what anyone leading a company is thinking when they make these decisions; especially if unforced. Maybe that's the real difference: they made a quality product and had the privilege of controlling their destiny.

They weren't, but the decision is not so simple. The first raise they did was on really, really good terms. If you want to grow a company faster and get ridiculous terms from someone like a16z it's not a bad path.
