Even if El Niño DOES develop, there’s still potential for a BAD hurricane season. It only takes one. Or two. Last year had same number of major hurricanes, two, that are forecast this year. If last year’s seasonal forecast had been accurate, it would have been similar to today’s.

After 3-year La Niña we could go to El Niño this year. Usually a neutral year is between La Niña and El Niño. But previous two triple-dip La Niña episodes were immediately followed by El Niño, including 1957. That hurricane season started with deadly cat 3 Audrey in Gulf in June.
