Our home secretary is promising "greater support for the victims of counterterrorism". Quite interesting to think about who they might be: the family of Jean Charles de Menezes, perhaps, or half the population of Iraq.

These made me feel slightly better about the fact that it's the last day of being in the EU. Of course, renewal and green-shoots metaphors are probably a bit premature. But snowdrops don't really mark the beginning of spring, so perhaps they're appropriate after all.

These preposterous instructions are explained by the fact that two ounces ≈ 56.699 grams. From tomorrow we'll be able to go back to two ounces. Who said there were no ?

Just a Minute has been part of my life since childhood, so am saddened by this -- I knew he was old, but I'd come to think that, like the queen, he was never going to die.

A good homework question for my daughter this time: to match beginnings and ends of four words. Tea ing Pain cher Read ting Play ful Fun that it tests a mixture of logic and spelling. (The logic part is to find a perfect matching in a non-trivial bipartite graph.)

If I find myself in possession of one of these, I shall take it out of circulation. If all remainers did that, we would be marking Brexit by showing that we haven't gone away. I think there will be 10 million of them, so ave. cost <50p per remain voter.

Good news: mathematician Tuna Altınel, who was imprisoned in Turkey on political charges, has been acquitted.

I have a favor to ask. For 20+ years I've been working on a dream: to make all science funded by US taxpayers freely available to all. We are on the verge of achieving this. But we need to show that people care. So please, if you can, sign this letter:

Paik and Rivin have responded to Pachter's criticisms: I don't have time to try to work out who's right -- I'll just have to wait for Pachter's further response, which I assume will follow in due course -- but maybe someone else does.

This, my Numberphile debut, is about van der Waerden's theorem, including a proof (presented informally of course) for the case of two colours and progressions of length 3. It was fun to do, and my interviewer added some beautiful graphics afterwards, as is his wont.

Just another Monday morning in Cambridge. (Turns out that it was like this all round the country to the point that is trending.)

I have now reread 's post and I had forgotten that indeed she explicitly says that she cannot straightforwardly say either that she is for or that she is against diversity statements. So I misrepresented her -- I should have checked before.

FWIW I don't have a position on diversity statements. I'm v much in favour of diversity, but I listen to , who knows far more about it than I do. She is against diversity statements, so I couldn't support (or oppose) them without going into the issue much more than I have.

tl;dr Joshua Paik and Igor Rivin do a statistical analysis and conclude that the better you are at maths, the less likely you are to support diversity statements. Turns out that age is a confounding variable that explains *everything* that they see in data on citation counts etc.

As an additive combinatorialist, I always have trouble choosing an appropriate classification of my papers from this system. From a quick look, I get the impression that this revision isn't going to help.
