A thread for the heroes, the American Cassandras who warned us about what was coming, and what to do about it. Feel free to add other examples of striking prescience to this thread. /1

Yes, we have heard plenty about the naysayers & pollyannas — including our Ostrich in Chief — who poo-pooed the coronavirus. And it wasn't just the politicians who failed to raise the alarm. Even W.H.O and CDC seemed fearful of stirring panic. /2

We've also had some Monday-Morning-Quarterbacking about what we should have been doing back in January and February. But here's just a handful of the folks that actually were talking the talk back then. /3

On Jan 27, @ScottGottliebMD called for widespread surveillance testing with quick results at doctors' offices & points of entry. On Feb 3, he said we have to assume the coronavirus "is here and circulating." /4

      David Isaacson Retweeted Steve Redmond

I don't know who this @sjredmond guy is, but I couldn't find anyone else on Twitter who was talking about ventilator shortages in the U.S. back in January. https://twitter.com/sjredmond/status/1222024404336439296 … /5

      David Isaacson added,

      Steve Redmond @sjredmond
According to a study in The Lancet, approximately 30% of the initial 41 #coronavirus patients required ventilation. There is a short supply of ventilators no matter where you are, even in North America. Those ventilators are used for all kind of ICU uses, not just this virus. /2

On Jan 28, @SenWarren released an amazing, comprehensive plan (of course) on combatting infectious disease outbreaks. https://medium.com/@teamwarren/preventing-containing-and-treating-infectious-disease-outbreaks-at-home-and-abroad-3336e1e80a88 … /6

Please, add your own. Who raised the alarm early? Who suggested more comprehensive testing? Who said we should shut down & stay at home? Who warned about shortages of N95 respirators & other PPE? Who was first to talk about using the Defense Production Act to make ventilators? /7

Okay, one more: it took a while for "flattening the curve" to enter the vernacular. @zeynep, in this @sciam blog on Feb 27, was one of the first to advise Americans to prepare to "stay home for two or three weeks, going out as little as possible." https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/preparing-for-coronavirus-to-strike-the-u-s/ … /8

          Also, as I tweeted a couple weeks ago, @mtosterholm @CIDRAP wrote this on Feb 24: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/24/opinion/coronavirus-pandemic.html … /9

On the same day, this NYT journalist was the first I’d heard compare this virus to the 1918 pandemic. This was the day a lot of people woke up. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-daily/id1200361736?i=1000466841517 …

And @mlipsitch has been sounding alarm for a while. He was dragged for asserting that Indonesia couldn’t possibly be infection free and modeled its presence there. https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/14/indonesia-coronavirus-academic-harvard-marc-lipsitch …
