2) doesn’t want AND expect an amazing first draft. And you often have a week or less to produce it. That’s not to say that stuff won’t change, but they want to see the best you got. And you have to produce it in record time. So better to get in the habit of writing the best…
3) you can even when you’re writing for yourself. And what does that require? An airtight outline where you’ve figured out all the nuts and bolts first. Which will also set you up well for your first staffing gigs because an amazing outline let’s your showrunner know…
4) you’re ready to write! I’ve seen people turn in lousy outlines and then lose the script assignment. Nurture great habits on your own writing and when you get your chance, you’ll be ready!
5) Edit: Lot of people defending the vomit draft. My point is, getting staffed means writing HIGH QUALITY PAGES FAST! Not much time for anything else. It’s a good skill to practice on your own stuff.
I like that term "vomit draft". Hadn't heard initial work described like that before but seems appropriate. I'll add it to my own writing process.
I’ve never been staffed so of course my experience is different. But doing that “vomit draft” when I’m stuck has really helped me get a lot of quality screenplays done in a timely manner. It’s much easier to tighten up once it’s on the page.
There are many different processes. I've done 10 seasons of Tv & I'm neurodivergent so a vomit draft HELPS A LOT. It's not what I turn in, but it expedites the re-writing & polishing process. So overall it produces better quality drafts on time.
