    Spot on. When teams go remote, there needs to be a fundamental shift in culture not just process or tools.

    I’ve learned on a distributed team: 1. Distributed teams don’t want workplace to feel synchronous 2. Products building “virtual offices” don’t know remote psychology 3. Remote teams don’t want co-workers to see which apps they’re working in, just like they don’t want that IRL

    At the end of the day though, the words don’t have to be perfect. What’s important is that it’s short and easy to remember, and you build a habit to write them down daily or even weekly.

    As for next year, I’m still trying to figure my words out. It takes a bit of time outside of work to really settle on something good. Typically, the time off during the holidays is a good time. I spend enough time away from work to be able to focus deeply on it.

    This year, it was “reduce and focus” to help me ruthlessly prioritize and focus on only one thing at a time. In my personal journal entries, I see the difference in how distracted I was and how much it used to bother me. I feel more stable than ever now.

    Last year, my words were “balance and boundaries” to make sure I wasn’t letting work take over every aspect of my life. I’d often write the words at the end of every journal entry. Overall, it really helped me compartmentalize work from my personal life.

    Instead of creating a New Year resolution every year and forgetting about it a month later, I starting doing this thing where I pick a phrase or a couple of words that sets a theme for my year. This helps guide my decisions and weigh what’s important to me throughout the year. 👇🏽
