      The clarity is retrospective. At the time none or few of society's sentries saw the shadow passing in the night. Some had a glimpse and hastened to bar the doors.

      We have an ambiguous relationship toward authorities. On the one hand we blame them for never anticipating disaster. On the other hand we believe their predictions about what comes next.

      But maybe the secret to survival is not to trust the authorities completely. When Germany glimpsed the shadow they reacted a little sooner and that made a difference.
