1) I don't know any entrepreneurs whose behaviour would change without entrepreneurs' relief.

2) Eliminating it would hike the applicable tax from 10% to 20%. That is not an unreasonable amount of tax to pay when you make money.

3) I have seen quite a lot of time wasted on 'tax avoidance' - i.e. trying to make sure you qualify for ER. This is not value-added activity for the economy. Some of this has resulted in some morally wrong (if legally ambiguous) activity.

What's missing from the article is why was it even brought forward in the first place? It sounds like no one is supporting it today but who was supporting it at the time and why? It's hard to think of a tax incentive with such big numbers and so little supportive argument behind

The extremely startup/entrepreneur friendly tax system was a factor in me deciding to stay in the UK following my exit. Not the biggest factor but it definitely had an influence.

Taxing a high-tech entrepreneur who has invested years to build a huge business at the same rate as someone who got lucky in one day with a forex transaction isn’t a good signal.

Many that i've spoken to see the carrot of ER as something that justifies the perceived pain of UK NI, employers NI, rising dividend tax, income tax, corporation tax, etc. Take that carrot away & I reckon lots of UK digital biz will float off to singapore, isle of man etc...

that's an interesting take, and could be right. But I believe that EIS/EMI are very powerful benefits of building digital biz in UK (compared to e.g. Netherlands, Ireland, Germany in which I have direct experience). Arguably better than US too.

I’d be very supportive of the cap going back to 1m

I’m not delighted by this news, but I get it. My advice to gov/treasury - 1) Don’t shaft us entrepreneurs too hard, otherwise we’ll go elsewhere 2) Take on US tech giant tax dodgers (properly) 3) Don’t forget my local barber, John. His card machine always seems to be broken
