Also, anyone who talks about apprenticeship in reference to this article is seeing something that's not there. I think apprenticeship is a very positive thing. This article is not about apprenticeship.

The snow shovelling scene was there to show that children, just like adults, enjoy feeling needed and making a difference. It is not the nature of the work performed as much as the necessity of it. As for formal apprenticeships I assume it will be covered later on.

I strongly agree. Labour's plan to get 50% of school leavers into university has been a disaster. One of the worst outcomes is a widespread attitude among many young people that manual work is beneath them. I suffered from this conceit as a teenager and I regret it.

Any still lingering conceit quickly vanished when I built furniture by myself for the first time. This is hard.

In India, children in many families learnt their family trade/craft from a very young age. Many of these traditional craft based industries were destroyed in the name of fighting 'child labour'. For instance the hand made carpet industry.

Yes, too much school time invested in nonsense. Manual work is a great complement for study. Being an apprentice in some craft teaches humility, hardwork and love for well done things.

i spent my non school time in my father’s blacksmith and carpentry shop. the manuality learned there has been far more useful professionally than my masters degree
