There is no reason you can't wall a village. Here is Naganeupseong in Korea, built in 1397. Similar fortified villages exist all over the world, from Alaska to Italy to Sri Lanka and Nigeria. If it was 2-3 times larger with a proper center it would be a perfect medieval town.pic.twitter.com/UN9d6T63EP

Here is another famous "corporate campus". The difference needs not be pointed out, it is human scaled.pic.twitter.com/DzTya960kS

Apparently the "greenest" top 500 corporation in the US is Cisco Systems. Look at their HQ in San Jose. Acres of parki g lots. They are just mocking us at this point: no corporation can be called green if their employees need cars to work there.pic.twitter.com/jNgOUlvUNn

Gridded cities are above all colonies, subjects. Rome and Athens are good examples of free cities (or ruling cities), as contrasted with their colonies (for example Piraeus and Londinium). I am not a fan of grids!pic.twitter.com/EiNCM87mMN

The Kasr (fortified village) typically has about 1000 houses, all built with 3-5 rooms around a central courtyard, in stone of 50cm thickness, about 1000 years ago. The courtyard means no AC is needed, unlike modern homes or eco "passivhaus". At night occupants sleep on the roof.pic.twitter.com/7IwtS69tn6

The designer of the inside of this carbuncle (the outside he is not responsible for), John Pawson, undoubtedly reserves the nicer things for himself and his family. Here is his home in the Cotswolds, complete with a medieval fish pond.pic.twitter.com/y6nOaPtJgN

Souk Lalla Achou in the middle, is about 0.2 acres, used as a market square on most days. Not many parking spaces in this city.pic.twitter.com/s9wGuVcRnG

The holy city of Beni Isguen in Algeria, funded in A.D. 1051 and originally walled twice over (only one set remains today). 0.14 km², with about 7500 inhabitants (about 54k per km² without any buildings taller than two floors).pic.twitter.com/aI8WC6P65e

When your local UK politicians say they are committed to fighting global warming, just hold up a photo of the Design Museum. If they don't care, why should we?pic.twitter.com/pIelq54q8X

On the left, the environmental disaster that is The Design Museum in Kensington, £83 million in 2016, expected life span: 30 years, with a bit of luck and millions in funding. On the right, Cafe Wien in Wernigerode, built by hand in A.D. 1583, ca. £10, sustainable indefinitely.pic.twitter.com/x5OqXxkwsA

The interior is even worse. Full of colorful garbage in simplistic shapes that mirrors the contents of your weekly plastic recycling bin. But with an average price of £29.95.pic.twitter.com/gX6zAjV7O5

It is easy to overdo things with trees, but it is hard to deny that they are popular. The main square in Bratislava was turned into a park after it lost its civic function after the communist takeover. Squares are bourgeoisie maybe? It was far more rustic in 1843.pic.twitter.com/yj7iuPLqBA

“Postwar America spent most of its fortune on a single project, building bigger houses farther apart from one another, and the result was that people ran into each other less: the number of close friends claimed by the average American dropped by half.” — Falter, Bill McKibbenpic.twitter.com/58CSkzc4dm

The pot has a rounded bottom and is called hagama (羽釜), the wooden lid (木蓋) is shaped like that to not lose it shape from decades of use and to be heavy enough to create a tight seal over the lid. A sort of pressure cooker, cuts down on fuel use. The modern is called 炊飯器.pic.twitter.com/Xxi7zztgtM
