    Earlier this year, I conducted interviews with 50 journalists and other experts within/around the news media to explore the ethics of amplifying networked bigotry, identity-based harassment, and dis- and misinformation. Here is the final, 3-part report:

    That's what makes shock over the current state of things so ...ahistorical, for one thing. This shit has been happening for 100+ years in exactly the same ways. More intensified now due to network/technological changes etc etc but a generationally-compounding problem

    And of course for some, this coverage can be helpful, but CAN is the strongest thing you can say. It just as easily normalizes & bolsters hate, providing bad actors all the manipulation fodder they could dream of-- which Klansmen knew in the 1920s and the late 1860s before that

    Belief that negative coverage will disinfect harmful action/people goes back generations- it backfired spectacularly in coverage of the 1st & 2nd Klans (eg see work by ), and does the same w/ populist demagogues now. Yet it remains for many an unshakable assumption

    The media is better than it used to be (though not perfect) at avoiding both-sidesism. What we haven't caught up to is that negative coverage can actually strengthen populist demagogues, so long as it lets them control the conversation.

    Also, disinfo doesn’t target comfortable establishment types first, so they get to keep ignoring. In contrast, populations who are targeted first (& whose warnings go unheeded) understand the risks immediately, see . So this is a failure on many fronts

    Reflecting more broadly: the assumption that they SHOULD know better underestimates how institutional norms function as blinders-- both sides reporting, throwing facts at things, the marketplace of ideas etc all are assumed to be curative, when they actually lead us exactly here

    yes, they tend to add to the harms because they are not affected by it but also don't know the nuances enough to tell the story effectively. It's circular in some ways and very problematic.

    The numbers on race are especially critical when disinfo is approached as an environmental justice issue, in which POC are disproportionately affected/poisoned. It really doesn't help when all the gatekeepers are overwhelmingly white & don't see those risks
