Alternate history: What if our 20-year coprocessor arms race had evolved FPGAs not GPUs? Would there be distinction between hw and sw today?

@worrydream @marshray Can you imagine a selection pressure that wouldn't have gone towards ASICs?

@worrydream One thing: software(ish)-defined radio would have taken off faster, much more comm gear would be upgradeable across generations.

@worrydream of course! But even many FPGA systems have CPUs too (usually PPC or ARM).

@worrydream FWIW deep down below perhaps even the microcode many contemporary x86/amd64 systems are different than their higher architecture

@worrydream but it may be a different distinction. Certainly more than many ever get at, but still fundamental to symbolic representation.

@worrydream @BrianTRice Alternate framing: FPGAs aren’t magic and HDL synthesis isn’t hardware design. It’s just software by another name.

@worrydream if @PicoComputing is any indication as well as trends in many ASICs going FPGA, I think the future may still trend that way.

@worrydream: I did some research on those in the 80's. IMO, we'd still distinguish hw from sw, but be a LOT better at parallel processing.
