I'm finally finishing "From Counterculture to Cyberculture" (I read the first chapter like a year ago) and, while its not an especially gloomy book, its kind of painful to read for a person in tech

I'm struggling to put this into words, but the core depressing idea suggested in here is that the hacker ethos wasn't some noble ideal that was subverted; the hacker ethos "won" and this is the world that it created
