i just find it funny cuz pokemon's always like "just love and kindness and youll be the bestest" while the actual workings of the game is that you should repeatedly create and discard things until you find perfection, often taking a looooong time

game studies people call this “ludonarrative dissonance” and were universally traumatized by the 5 or so years we spent debating whether it was real in the late 00s/early 10s

I think mostly we agree that it exists now? but it doesn’t feel “concluded” so much as everyone refuses to discuss it anymore. every once in a while someone tries to start it all up again

Isn't this dissonance characteristic of any domain where humans layer a narrative over a system? e.g. mythological and religious narratives over actual nature, advertising narratives over the actual economic system, political narratives over the actual social system... 1/

The scientific process (and, to some extent, historical research done well) are humanity's only serious attempts to escape this vulnerability by painstakingly ensuring that the narrative matches the system in every possible detail. 2/

stories are the most popular method of system memorization. when you refuse to use them, people will invent their own.

for the case of pokemon, i think the reason why the value of friendship or whatnot is emphasized in the narrative (whereas mario contains zero rhetoric) is perhaps that it has a TV show that is considered canon, and which had to have story, and a message.

definitely – although game systems are unusual because they’re designed alongside game stories & can be intended to make arguments of a sort, whereas in other contexts we’re generally trying to tack a narrative explanation onto a pre-existing system after the fact

(see also the ongoing debate about “procedural rhetoric” and whether systems can actually make arguments in and of themselves, independent of the representational “window dressing” we surround them with)
