The Crown's Gillian Anderson looks eerily like Margaret Thatcher in new season 4 set photos:

If you haven’t read CS Lewis’s brilliant 1944 lecture on the dangerous desire for the “Inner Ring” in British life, I can only recommend it

This bit towards the end of Bradbury's The History Man is on my mind more and more nowadays.

I almost cursed Peter Wright. Poor Michael Smith. Amazing last two legs and still lost.

I don’t want to curse him but Peter Wright might have an amazing year if he carries on like this, especially with MVG a bit out of form and adapting to new darts.

Snooker would kill for a woman to make the breakthrough like Fallon Sherrock and Lisa Ashton have for darts. It gets no coverage outside the sports media aside from Ronnie’s histrionics, and he’s nearly past his sell-by date. The sport is in OK shape but it needs something new.

This is a really good interview. I love the Helen Mirren bit and a killer line at the end about memoirs.

The bizarre 1920s fad of flagpole sitting, which explains this suggestive pre-code joke in '42 Second Street' (1933): Chorus Boy: [Seated] Hey! Where ya sittin'? Where ya sittin'? Loraine: [On his lap] On a flagpole, dearie. On a flagpole.

Title of the movie "Duck Soup" is one - to say something was "duck soup" meant it was something simple and easy to do. Honestly you could probably write a book on lost cultural references in Marx Brothers movies alone! Great thread & topic here!

Nice to see Derek Jarman’s cottage on Countryfile. Good old Derek. Watch his films if you haven’t already - they’re great. I’m still weirdly proud that the only film I’ve ever seen in an IMAX cinema is Derek Jarman’s Blue.

To be clear, I don't mean things from old movies which have entered the modern lexicon. I mean bits of language or culture, now largely forgotten, which you would have instantly understood as a pre-1960 audience member.

I've reached that stage of weight loss where thin people (and it's always thin people) are warning me gravely "not to lose too much". Mate, I've just gone from obese to merely very overweight, I think there's a way to go yet before I'm knocking on the door of your exclusive club.

These Season 26 extras are top notch. Showman is great, and the Aldred/Sweet interview equally good. Heroic research on the latter - a photograph of the back of her head! And Tom Baker’s y-fronts to cap it off.
