    Looking forward to seeing what I can learn. This might become my command-line tool language of choice. The only problem with that right now is the amazingly large binaries that the default settings produce. Gotta learn how to get those down from their half-meg starting point.

    All the critical libraries seem to be there - Postgres drivers, Date and Time manipulation, HTTP clients, and more. There are GUI packages out there, such as FLTK or GTK - but windowing systems are the MOST OS specific part of a program, so grain of salt there.

    Having worked in the Java ecosystem (with Maven), and Ruby ecosystem (with Bundler), and Python (with Pip) I am impressed that Rust has a built-in package management system (Cargo) that seems to be PART of the language. It was really the next logical step in language evolution.

    This is documentation meant for language users, and I can respect that. The introductory guides are VERY good and I literally read 15 chapters of it in an evening, following along and making sample programs to better understand what the language did and didn't do.

    The documentation feels like it leaves a little bit to be desired - though it does document platform-specific behavior in the standard library nicely. Less well explained are nuances of the language, such as the differences between String and OsString, admittedly complex.

    I've been doing a bit of programming with Rust and I have to say I don't immediately hate it. The object oriented features do feel clunky, almost compulsively so, but I've done enough C to not immediately be turned off by their almost compulsive avoidance of classes.

    In case it seems "obvious" to someone that stat could return inconsistent, data, I point to the following comment from Stack Overflow, solidly upvoted and accepted as the correct answer.

    And no, I am not surprised that the filesystem doesn't block but I AM surprised that stat's not an atomic operation. I am fairly ignorant of how these lowest level functions actually work, however.

    It's not super often that programming surprises me these days - I'm generally pretty jaded. But uh. Yeah, this did. (For the uninitiated, the OS might change something in the middle of examining it, and might return info that's a mix of both before and after modification.)

    There is no more damning fact about the Mac touch bar than this: when it crashes, nothing detects the error state, and your touch bar just freezes. The complete lack of attention to UX is flustering from Apple.

    Got a software update today. Apparently they have to repeat the patch in a few weeks to make sure it worked. I don't mind, I'm happy to be hopeful for the first time in a while.
