Anyway, I just started the original because it's actually been a long time since I've seen it. Watching movies post transition is often emotional in surprising ways for me, but this is going to be extra.

Is there a word for that feeling where you don't think you know the next line, but suddenly you find yourself saying it along with the character?

It's hard not to project all over this movie. Especially the idea of bringing honor to your family. Growing up I had it drilled into me that marrying a woman in a temple was the only way to be with my family in heaven. Serving a full mission was called "Returning with honor".

It's a special kind of sinking feeling to realize everyone expects you to live a life entirely incompatible with who you are, that being authentic would dishonor your family, and to feel that way but not even have the words to describe why you feel that way.

The part where she cuts her hair kills me. My mom would always make me cut mine even though I desperately wanted long hair. She thought gushing about how handsome I was with short hair would make me feel better. It's wild how rigidly we police gender presentation. It's just hair!

But, that aside, the speech and the mass bow make me cry all the happy tears. Nothing is better than seeing someone thrive as their authentic self.

"The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter." So, there are even more tears to shed I see.

Anyway, like I said, Mulan the person is not trans. But as a movie, thematically, Mulan is very trans. Or at least so much about gender roles it amounts to the same thing.

Do you ever sit through the credits of Mulan and get deeply melancholic about how underappreciated Christina is while she sings Reflection?

A few folks have pointed out that Lea Salonga sings the film version, which to my mind is by far the more emotionally impactful rendition of the two!
