Remarkable how closely the descent of mumsnet into transphobia resembles various nerd hobby forums I have known http://www.huckmagazine.com/perspectives/opinion-perspectives/mumsnet-transphobia-online/ …pic.twitter.com/C4fQL2JpO2

it works like this: High effort posters colonise the site, and push their pet issue. They remain 'civil', but constantly argue in bad faith.

They post heavily, inserting themselves into every conversation or debate. To interact with the site is to interact with them.

This annoys some ppl enough that they lash out and are banned for being 'uncivil'. Others find the experience so unpleasant they just leave.

And now these power users have set the tone of the site. People who disagree with them leave at a far higher rate than people who agree.

The site gains a reputation. More people who agree with the power users arrive. Others know to avoid it.

The only times I've really seen this avoided is when moderators identify and ban bad faith, obnoxious users early on.

This of course requires giving moderators a degree of latitude, rather a rigid set of rules than can be gamed.

it isn't always hate speech (though it often is) it can be something as trivial as some obnoxious Xbox fans chasing off PS4 users.

The key point is that whoever is prepared to be the most obnoxious and persistent will eventually set the tone of the forum.

I have lost count of the number of times I have encountered "demand extensive rebuttal and then reject it out of hand" in the wild.

I'm not even sure if people are doing it deliberately anymore or if they've just learned to debate via Reddit and think that's how it works
