Last summer I switched editing The Incomparable from Logic on my Mac to Ferrite on my iPad. The clincher: using Apple Pencil to edit a podcast. Totally transformative. Made it a more delightful experience _and_ generated better final result. Who knew?

Ugh, tweeted the wrong image, but now if I delete it, it'll break the thread. I meant to include the one I’d annotated:

It’s not as clean as, say, Markdown. But it’s a lot cleaner than HTML, and supports lots of specialised features, like chunks that only appear on iPad or iPhone, buttons that use native images (SF Symbols) where available. And is also available as data for the search engine.

The User Guide used to be written in raw HTML, but that got increasingly difficult to manage due to all the variations (iPhone/iPad, iOS 12/13, print version etc). Now, it's written in an unusual way — in of all things, using some similar techniques to SwiftUI:

You can just type some text and it'll search for it throughout the guide — but it'll also suggest chapters or keywords you might be interested in:

New update to Ferrite has been released — mostly minor fixes, performance improvements, that sort of thing. It does also include a big update to the User Guide, now featuring a full search facility:

Just posted an article on the blog about Zero Crossings & audio editing: • What they are • Why you care about them when editing audio • What you should aim for • How Ferrite & Hokusai handle them (and why they do it differently)

Doesn’t make it a failure. I don't have a crystal ball & can't predict what developers will or won't do, but I do know it's way too early to call it one way or the other.

Certainly there are limitations and issues with it — I’ve filed a bunch of feedback. Tho quite a lot can be worked around, with persistence & an AppKit-based plugin. The bigger the app, the more time it takes. So no, you probably won't have seen a lot of great Catalyst apps yet.

Listening to podcasts recently, seems like The Marzipanic is rearing its head again, current iteration: "Catalyst Is A Failure™" Thing is… when was it ever true that making a thoughtful, well-designed app happened overnight? It always takes time & Catalyst doesn't change that.

Time to go work on yet another alternative…

It’s not even like you can say “Screw it, I’ll do everything old-school pure native AppKit and get access to everything”, cuz you'll still be missing some things (e.g. SF Symbols aren’t supported, even tho they are all available on Mac since Catalyst apps can use them).

I’ve been trying to make one relatively simple bit of UI (in a standalone testbed app) for days. Every time I think I’m on a roll, I bump into a different wall of missing functionality. I try different implementations. I try different designs that don’t need same features.

If you want to make a Mac app, there are _4_ primary APIs you could be using, in a sorta 2x2 grid: AppKit, UIKit (w/Catalyst), SwiftUI-in-AppKit, SwiftUI-in-UIKit. It’s a complex mess of what each does/doesn’t support — figuring out which to use for any given UI is trial & error

Ferrite 2.4 is approved and should now be rolling out in the App Store! Featuring an updated recording UI that offers multichannel recording, improved headphone monitoring options, the ability to exclude channels from recordings, and more.

Latest iOS 13 "fun fact"* I’ve discovered: it’s possible for UIApplication.shared.openSessions (UIKit call to return a list of open windows in multi-window apps) to return multiple items even on an iPhone. Which doesn’t support multiple windows. 😐 * blatant bug

A peek at one of the main new features of the updated recording panel in Ferrite 2.4. I know a bunch of people have asked for this:

It’s created with SwiftUI, by the way (so it requires iOS 13 — users on iOS 12.4 will continue to see the old panel).
