    The U.S. Senate has confirmed William Burns to become the next Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He was approved by a voice vote. He’s a former State Department career diplomat who served as U.S. Ambassador to Russia.

    It doesn’t get much closer than this. By a vote of 50-49, the Senate has confirmed California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to become Secretary of Health and Human Services. The son of Mexican immigrants, he’s the first Latino HHS Secretary. He’s also a former U.S. Congressman.

    The US jobs picture remains bad. The Labor Department says 770,000 Americans filed for first time unemployment benefits last week. Another 282,394 self employed and gig workers filed for benefits under the Pandemic Assistance Program. Some 18 million Americans receive benefits.

    This is encouraging. Some 40 million Americans - about 12% of the U.S. population - have now been fully vaccinated for Covid-19. That means they’ve received either two shots of the Pfizer vaccine or two shots of the Moderna vaccine or one shot of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
