What‘s something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?

Yeah I know but I was asked to give a comment based on my experience and I did. I worked in the field as one of the good guys. So hope things are progressing and for allowing me to answer this comment with my experience.

Companies with HR departments like John is describing are companies that currently find it profitable to give their employees certain benefits. They are a small percentage of employers and their policies/attitudes towards their staff are always subject to change.
-
As in as soon as you have any thing - as minor as workman’s comp to sexual harassment. HR circles the wagons even if you’re one of them. I can’t imagine working at big corps like Fox or CBS- hushing people up. There are good people in HR- but in the end they protect enployER
-
I respectfully disagree, especially as HR continues to branch out into programs (OD) which is 100% for employees. And I work for one of the largest employers in my province. But in
, so I don’t know American labor laws etc. -
If HR departments want what's best for the employees, how come they don't fight against layoffs? The company decides "we need this many new employees" and HR puts that into action. The company decides "we need to lay off this many employees" and HR puts that into action.
-
If the HR department in a specific company is doing X, y, or z program that supposedly benefits employees, it's because company management either came up with the idea or, when it was suggested, decided that program would ultimately benefit the company.

You're very naive. You may or may not be in that happy situation. I doubt it, but in my entire working life at dozens of companies, HR has ONLY acted to back up management and screw employees.
-
I’m sorry you’ve had those experiences. That’s not been the case for me. My wife works in HR and has also had a completely different experience than what is described here as “100% of all companies” being self-seeking and anti-employee.

Sure, and most of those are huge high tech monsters like Google. But let’s be clear about the reasons for their apparent generosity and their lofty stock prices: they have to in order to attract and keep talent!
-
Employee retention and engagement are the pretty shiny "come work with us" objects designed to get the best of the best. I am simply stating HR is awesome-I loved my job. Until you have a grievance of any sort then you realize their bottom line is protecting the companies

As an employment lawyer representing companies, primarily HR departments, I agree with John. Some clients have incredible culture-driven HR policies and they are routinely listed as the best place to work. Looks for those places.

Thanks John! There are a few of us good HR people that care about our employees. It’s hard to balance the needs of the employees with balancing the company’s interests, but it’s possible.
-
You misunderstand- there are HR/SHRM employees that love their job do the fun part of HR- that’s why I was loved my job. Many facets to HR- perhaps you will see it in plain sight. Retention AND engagement is fun -Bottom line IF YOU HAVE A GRIEVANCE IT is ABOUT protecting comp

In general, HR does not bring in revenue, and therefore in the majority of companies, in any conflict they are not given any real power over the actions of the managers of a department that does.

লোড হতে বেশ কিছুক্ষণ সময় নিচ্ছে।
