Polite but hard disagree. Every single metric you could conjure is unfair to someone. Invitations are most certainly a metric of prestige. The best approach we have available is to ensure evaluation on a diversity of metrics.

I will respectfully disagree, and to clarify this might be field specific, but in chemistry it is absolutely common to call in favors w/ friends or alumni to pad your stats. My bigger pt is that this system favors those that can travel. Most don’t list “declined” invites.

An added benefit of encouraging online instead of in person talks is that we would all fly less, cutting down on our carbon footprint dramatically. I did the math and flying accounts for 1/4 of my own footprint!

Agreed! I would love for eco-savvy universities to start prioritizing this. I also imagine most depts' annual seminar budget is likely ~$10-25K/yr. This could instead be used in fellowships, awards, or support.

Nope. I’m in a medical school and don’t have coursework teaching duties. So, invited lectures are a significant part of the education component of my tenure package. Plus these visits are a great vehicle for sparking new collaborations!

I just chaired an all virtual conference,
@PhotonicsMeetup. Over 1100 researchers from 37 countries joined in to watch the presentations - which happened on 4 diff continents. It was amazing. Chaotic. But amazing. -
The next web-conference will be less chaotic and will become the normal way to do it in <10 years.

We should also stop using "beauty pageant" awards as indicators of success either. So many of these young investigator awards are based on who you worked for, not what you did.
