Lots of concerns regarding safety standards and inability to recover in malpractice suits. And potential language barrier. That said, I see a lot of plastic surgery tourism: people from China and SE Asia flock to South Korea for beauty procedures
follow up: how come medical tourism hasn’t taken off? why haven’t we seen more businesses like the surgery center of oklahoma? My anecdata living in a medical tourism destination, Thailand, it took off years ago as major hospitals are very busy with medical tourists. I've had 2 surgeries, family and friends had surgeries and other treatments. It's world class. I think FUD is keeping some people away.

Was recently thinking this after listening to the econtalk podcast. Think there is probably a barrier to doing trying medical tourism for the first time. My bet is that people who do it once are much more likely to do it again. Just a hunch though.
