In organizing the recent Applied History conference, we invited a number of distinguished female historians to give papers, none of whom was able to attend. In the end, just under 24% of conference participants were women.

I would say unbelievable except it is so very predictable. A perfect echo chamber of privileged white male economic history and its influence on privileged white male political policy as if that’s what applied history is or ever was or always should be.

The men that did speak at the conference have got a responsibility too. They should be ashamed to be sat there without any women next to them.

To be fair to my friends here, it seems to me possible that they accepted without having a clue about the all male line up.. and for all we know they may have expressed their disappointment when they discovered. Neither are known for their blokeish exclusivity!

Because their your friends they are blameless, but because everyone hates Niall Ferguson it’s ok for everyone to jump on him ? 🤔

No..I dont think that. I mean we just dont know what any of the participants knew when they agreed to participate. We do know that the organiser knew the line up!

Yes, I think one of the problems is speakers don’t see line ups until long after we’ve already accepted. Before that should we ask organizer, “Have you appropriately considered diversity?” Presumptuous at best. One expects organisers to know it’s 2018. Obv not all do.

Yes, you should. We can't assume that people will do better bc it's 2018. The evidence is all around that many people at the top of this profession don't think women, POCs, and especially black/indigenous/Latinx/Asian women have anything substantive to add to scholarly debate.

It's incredibly easy, when invited to anything, make organisers know you will not participate without diversity of speakers. I say "thank you for the invitation, as a point of principle I won't speak at events with ≥2 speakers if all speakers are white." Easy peasy.

Holland tweeted earlier that he "apologised profusely for being a white male before giving my talk". I don't know if blokeish exclusivity can be signalled any more clearly than that.

Yeah. My male friends do that. They did it last year. I gave them hell for it. They got their shit together and the conference is now not running. And the topic of the conference in question? Diversity.
