Kudos to @NSPFPE for pressing all parties for their positions on restoring democracy, accountability & community voice when it comes to governance- because it's entirely absent right now following #Bill72. /2

The current vacuum of community voice in decision making meant @HRCE_NS was able to execute a 12.5% staffing cut across Metro high school months ago that eliminated Unassigned Instruction Time. It means less teachers doing more work & having less time... /3

...to support students, ensure safety & deliver school specific programs that enhance success & graduation rates. @HRCE_NS promised families there would be NO impact to students as a result of this cut. /4

Thanks to @ESJNovaScotia, we've learned that because teachers now have zero time in their day to provide hall duty & building supervision, @HRCE_NS is hiring (at a few cents/hr above min. wage) hall monitors to supervise high schools instead. /5pic.twitter.com/5OQIz4itfe

So, "no impact" means hiring complete strangers, paying them effectively a mininum wage, and trusting them with the safety & wider sense of respect & community in Metro high schools. /6

It's worth noting @HRCE_NS has a longstanding issue hiring & retaining enough lunch monitors for elementary schools given nearly identical pay/hours of work as these new positions. /7

Guess what @HRCE_NS's solution to this staffing shortage is? Incentivize teachers on their lunch to give up their lunch in exchange for extra prep time or reduced duty/expectations. /8

    8. Paul Wozney, NSTU President‏ @withwozney Aug 15

This means two things for metro high school staff & students this fall: 1. It's highly likely there will be shortages of staff to ensure hallways and entry/exit ways are safely monitored daily & enforce movement protocols (if required by COVID-19) /9

      2. The solution will be to push/pressure teachers who have no time during the day to give up prep time to cover off safety duties, which will have a definite negative impact on teaching & learning. /10

Parents, students & school staff need a government that will abandon the "race to the bottom" approach employed for the last 8 years that means NS students learn in some of the largest class sizes nationwide from staff constantly ordered to do more with less. /11

Instead of "reallocating" resources already stretched threadbare, we need a government dedicated to restoring funding to levels last seen before the John Savage butchering of #nsed. /12

Instead of rolling out "improvements" financed by the time, resources & mental health of school staff, we need a government that treats school staff with respect & care so our students are supported by a team that's healthy & at its best every day- not burned out. /13

I urge all NSians to weigh heavily the need for public schools that have everything they need to support our students through a pandemic recovery. Our schools matter so little right now there isn't even a plan in place for how to reopen them safely in a few weeks. /14

Public education is the single largest, most interconnected system in operation in NS, the 2nd largest expenditure of government & quite possibly the key to a just recovery from a pandemic & a prosperous future. Please vote accordingly. /end
