"this issue" seems far more complicated then one word that grabs a lot innocent and oppressed people in it

The reddit incel communities *drove out* women who identified as incels b/c of the doctrine that any woman could find a willing sexual partner if they just “lowered their standards”. Self-described incels creates a community founded upon excluding women, & will shout down men

who are insufficiently misogenistic. I have had (male) friends who initially believed incel communities were support communities for people who had romantic difficulties who were excluded or intimidated out for questioning “women are evil” statements. I am friends w/ other men

who visited on of the incel subreddits, were horrified, & now firmly reject the labeling. There are plenty of wonderful people of all genders who struggle w/ finding sexual partners but refuse the “incel” label. It seems unhelpful to force it on them against their wishes.

Interesting and helpful context thank you. But why are we letting redditors define the word. Or if that's the definition why does Wiktionary disagree? One white supremacist group need not malign all white people.

They get to define it because they invented it, as explained in the thread I linked in my first tweet! The Wiktionary entry was written by a person who either didn't have this context or chose to misrepresent it because they have an agenda. You know, because it's a wiki.

a woman actually originally invented the word, that’s the best part

This interview w/ her is pretty interesting!https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/25/woman-who-invented-incel-movement-interview-toronto-attack …

I see no reason we can't hijack it back

Why would you want to? You used the race example a few times. Okay, so some people are white, fine. But would you be comfortable around someone who self-identified as "Aryan"? They are using a word that comes attached to the most hateful ideology imaginable. See the difference?

And yeah, I wasn't aware of the very early origin of "incel", just its use over the last 5-ish years. But to expand my analogy, the word "Aryan" was originally used in linguistics to mean "Indo-European". They stopped using the word after the Nazis stole it. It's a Nazi word now.

When you say that we shouldn't call out the incel community as toxic bc it's somehow a smear against anyone who isn't in a relationship (I'm not in a relationship, ffs) you aren't standing up for the little guy or advancing the discussion. Again, try listening to women for once!
