    Filed under Why Is Academia So Entitled And Weird: An external grad student whom I turned down supervising has sent me two angry emails demanding mentoring and that their main supervisor would be upset that I declined. Not sure how this is supposed to persuade me.

    if you are a junior scholar who has experienced this, I am sorry, and hope it is okay to remind us that it is possible for us to not replicate the bad practices we have witnessed. there are other ways of being in academia, ways of nurturing confidence, ways to inspire confidence.

    if you tell the world you are a confident academic but your confidence is built upon talking over other people all the time and putting down the research of others in your field and feeling competitive when junior scholars are flourishing then maybe your confidence is not
