Though maybe I've missed some commentary?

Imagine you're a CEO. Last year you were given $1 billion and told to spend it *as soon as possible* to deliver revenue growth. This year your board is telling you to hold onto that revenue but stop spending money. (And, in fact, if you don't stop spending you are a bankruptcy)

Well one of the things you say is: um, this AWS bill is kinda hefty; isn't GCP offering some kind of 2 years for free discount? (see, ie, here: https://twitter.com/GavinSBaker/status/1214679668286271488?s=20 …)

Gavin Baker @GavinSBakerAm curious to know if other VCs on Twitter are seeing the same AWS/GCP/Azure trends described by@zavaindar@chetanp? While I don't expect any responses, would be awesome to get even a few especially if the rationale was included.

But you don't stop there. You keep going up-stack: "um why are we paying for a separate messaging app when our microsoft office license already provides us with a messaging app?"

One of the magical qualities of enterprise SaaS is that it infiltrates orgs without having to get the OK from higher ups. But this is the exact kind of behavior that will be pinched off when a C-suite is trying to get spending under control.

So next the CFO will say: "That's it! All software expenditures have to run through my office." And voila the SaaS that was magically growing has to buy a salesforce to convince the CFO to buy the software.

So the common pushback against this being any kind of problem at all is: Yes, a VC slowdown is noteworthy, but those companies are really a pimple on the rest of the business landscape in terms of overall spend. Which is--I'm sure--absolutely true!

But I have seen my corner store's tech implementation, and I don't think that they are paying for a cloud SaaS seat.

And it is highly likely that the least disciplined spenders were those that were told to grow at all costs (and had money shoved into their hands to do so.)

And there is the somewhat unpredictable recursive element in all this that the money the least-disciplined spenders spent almost certainly went right into the hands of other VC startups, appeared as revenue there, and was then recycled into justifying more funding

If WeWork really did mark the turn in the VC leverage cycle https://twitter.com/wintonARK/status/1181614404535668736?s=20 … (of which I think the evidence is accruing) then I think it is impossible that it doesn't ramify through to the tools providers benefitting from those dollars sloshing through the ecosystem.

That nobody has fessed up to it yet strikes me as weird. It could be that all SaaS is sprinting into the mature enterprise space faster than their initial customer set is drying up. Or it could be that it is to come...
