I'm not saying our problems are simple. But the whole point of democracy is you need everyone involved to come up with good solutions. You need to tolerate messy debate. You need to go out of your way to bring in more voices.

If you feel as helpless as I sometimes do, it's only because you're not stupid. Most of our current leaders don't want us truly involved, because then we might actually solve the problems they've made a career of complicating. To them, getting us involved is not the job.

But you don't need a perfect structure to get started. You just need to get more regular people somehow involved in politics in a way that doesn't insult their intelligence. If that's what political leadership means to you, you stand a chance of actually improving things.

The other catch is, by the nature of such a process, you don't get to control the outcome. This is a different conception of leadership than that held by any of our major political parties. I can't help but be vague because how to structure all this is the money question itself.

That's way harder of course. The brand/consumer model is our normal way of doing anything at scale. Widespread collaborative problem solving would amount to a cultural transformation. But it does exist already, in the form of juries and citizens' assemblies.

The challenge for leaders interested in real solutions is to make us believe in democracy itself. Don't be a brand. Don't treat supporters like ATMs or foot soldiers. Treat them like intelligent people interested in collaborative problem solving.

It's not because people don't see problems. They're not stupid. They see emergencies--and they see leaders proposing that we adjust a few dials and carry on. Either that or proposing that we give up on progress entirely.

Voting is the easiest democratic activity, and it's normal for leadership to be so uninspiring that at least 1/3 of eligible voters don't even bother. Imagine how much lower the rate of deeper participation is.

It's unfortunate that so many people see politics as boring and irrelevant, but it's only because they're not stupid. They don't see real progress happening. At the highest levels of power, they see words used to injure instead of to communicate.

Fear of nuclear annihilation and ecological catastrophe would be bad enough by themselves, but I think we share a deeper fear: that we're not even doing the best we can. That our only course left is to take care of our own in an increasingly complex and unstable world.

There may once have been room for real debate within FPTP campaigns, but every inch has now been filled by professional political messaging over mass media. Modern FPTP is just a branding war that rewards polarizers and repels the thoughtful.

Because we aren't stupid, we don't want incremental progress on emergencies, nor do we want a "hero" who says things that are too good to be true. Yes, "strong men" have been winning lately, but let's stop deluding ourselves that FPTP elections express anything meaningful.

But why feel helpless, as a citizen of a wealthy, democratic nation? Because we aren't stupid: our leaders barely bother to hide their self-interest while proposing "solutions" that are drops in our oceanic problems. When catastrophe comes, they are least vulnerable.
