I’m not sure that I could ever date a mortician, embalmer, or CTS decon technician. Imagine them telling you that they tell me they had “a great day at work”? What does that even mean.

Laws once met with resistance, such as mandated seatbelt usage, are now conventional. In the future, laws that limit an individual’s carbon footprint, ban animal slaughter, legalize psilocybin for medical purposes, and protect personal genetic information could be conventional.

A conflicting view might press that laws that ignore social norms are ineffective. However, I would argue that new laws have the opportunity to influence behavior and change norms as they challenge what was previously accepted.

Examples: The legalization of gay marriage decreased homophobia. Civil rights movements in America decreased explicit racism. Smoking regulations decreased cigarette usage. Women’s legal rights decreased discrimination on the basis of gender in workplace settings.

Laws change social norms. Social norms change what the general public thinks is acceptable.

“When we think about the relative danger of this new coronavirus and influenza, there’s no comparison,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt Medical Center. “Coronavirus will be a blip on the horizon in comparison. The risk is trivial.”

This year, 120,000 have been hospitalized and 6,600 have been killed as a result of the flu (CDC). According to the World Health Organization, the four types of season influenza virus kill up to 650,000 people every year. And yet, Americans still aren’t particularly concerned.

  14. Me: I tend to do nice things for people I like. On the contrast, I do bad things to the people I don’t like. Truth: The people I like, I have grown to like while doing nice things. The people I hate, I have grown to hate while harming them. Behavior determines attitude.

  15. Me: Coffee wakes me up and gives me a litttle pep in my step in the AM Truth: I’m addicted to caffeine. As caffeine works as an adenosine antagonist, my brain has compensated by formed new receptors. I now need more coffee. Coffee, therefore, has turned me into an addict.

Human altruism is partly motivated by recognition. Examples: individuals wear “I Just Donated!” stickers after donating blood, individuals tip more when the barista flips around iPad and continues to watch, completing service work for a resume

After less than 24 hours in a new city, I have come to the conclusion that people in cities are more attractive. Possible underpinnings: - Larger sample size - Societal pressures to dress nice - Increased levels of vanity - Competition - Lower obesity rates than in rural areas

The image of eyes motivates cooperative behaviour as they induce a perception in participants of being watched. Plus, we like to think of ourselves as good people and strive to have others think the same.
