That that using technocratic competence as the standard of qualification is a gatekeeping move implicitly hostile to representation is clearest when you see how much more swiftly it is applied to women, people of color, and principled advocates of the poor.

I think Ocasio-Cortez is mistaken about a lot of things. I do and will fight against many of her proposals, but I think her presence in the House will improve it's representative function and will be a net benefit to the people she's fighting for, and for the country as a whole.

Policy-level technocrats are insufficiently technocratic at the institutional level. As a Shklarian liberal, I think institutions maximize freedom and welfare by blunt minimization of cruelty and domination, not by techocratic policy fine-tuning. Robust representation does that.

Moreover, experiential/viewpoint diversity improves the quality of deliberation. So better representation makes policy better, too, especially when advocates of previously omitted views are as smart, rational and clear as OAC. Outlier errors get caught and killed. They're okay.

When Republican politicians routine espouse policy positions that are transparently ludicrous, including dozens of *economics* policy positions well known to be totally absurd, the attacks on AOC for a minor error on economics are blatantly obvious motivated selective prosecution

So when will we hear a full-throated argument that accusing Trump of economic illiteracy "is a gatekeeping move implicitly hostile to representation"? (Which sentence is just another way of saying that it's OK if people with bad ideas elect representatives who are equally stupid)

It's not a "minor" mistake to hype yourself as having "a degree in economics" 1 week, then the next week claim that unemployment is artificially low because "so many" ppl have 2 jobs.
-
Number 1, ppl having multiple jobs have zero effect on unemployment numbers. Number 2, only around 5% of the workforce has more than 1 job. Number 3, her degree isnt in economics. Its in "International Relations/Economics." She probably didnt take 6 pure econ courses in school
-
Since she wanted to introduce her education as a campaign tool, she should be willing to release her college transcripts. Reporters shld be asking for these weekly if not daily. Hey. Arent ypu a reporter?pic.twitter.com/nXDdhgH6nj

I used to be an unabashed proponent of technocracy, but I've changed my mind. Technical considerations are important, but humane values cannot be assumed and are more important.

AFAIC the ramification of AOC's misadventures w/economics & Israel aren't "she's unfit to be in Congress," but rather "she'll fit right in." Which I don't consider a compliment.
-
It does argue not against her qualifications to serve in Congress, but against exaggerated expectations of her future impact. E.g., from the magazine formerly known as The New Republic:https://newrepublic.com/article/149520/alexandria-ocasio-cortezs-ambitious-plan-save-planet …

But she often claims to have special insight because of her econ degree. If she can't remember what the unemployment rate is, how much of basic macro has she forgotten?

Not that I really disagree, but I see the response to AOC re: unemployment (for instance) more as a semantic complaint than a truly technocratic one. On a technocratic level, I think it is pretty easy to talk about what she said without pretending she doesn't understand economics
-
No, no it is not. She cannot tout her economics degree and then completely fail on fundamental economic markers. It's a massive red flag you don't get to hide behind to appeal to technocracy.

feeds into familiar groove: "libs don't know econ 101." being correct in this individual case ends up misleading the public more than informing. hence polling like this:pic.twitter.com/iygcwEOxfd

Where was she wrong? That unemployment numbers are overshadowing stagnant wages?

“Technocracy for the poor, representation for the affluent” is how our government was designed to operate and there are a host of antibodies activated whenever America attempts genuine democracy.
