Interesting post on the Chinese talent that went into building ChatGPT. It illustrates of how connected China and the US are in AI, and how damaging it would be for the US to discourage Chinese scientists from working here.

We just released our work on robot soccer. I've been working on this for quite some time with my amazing colleagues at DeepMind. It's exciting how deep RL can produce such beautiful behaviors with low-cost robots. Full paper is available at arxiv.org/abs/2304.13653 Enjoy!

GPT-4 often "seems" remarkably clever, and some believe it exhibits features of more general intelligence. Experts say we need new methods for probing the model's intelligence, and more transparency from about how it works to truly understand it.

Ellsworth Kelly sometimes used simple algorithms and pseudo-randomness to generate abstract art. I wonder what he'd make of ChatGPT creating an image in his style using JS, and employing Math.random() to generate a different color-scape each time. jsfiddle.net/willknight/c2t

To those studying work, employment, occupations and professions: I think (two months in?!) it's officially too late to ask *whether* we'll get job displacement and change, role reconfiguration and so on.
The question is *how* and with what second order effects.
Let's get to it.

Bard still seems confused about whether it was or wasn't trained using private data from Gmail (Google says it it wasn't). In reality it probably has zero idea what it was trained since that information was not in the training data, so it's just making guesses.
